Dear Friends,

Back to School

We are proud to get students back to the full school experience throughout an interruption-free school year. The government of Ontario has invested to ensure a normal, stable and enjoyable return to the classroom.

From mental health to tutoring — the government is investing to ensure our kids catch up. They will be better supported through $176 million investment in the largest publicly-funded tutoring program in Canada, along with $10 million in new mental health funding.

Ontario students will return to class with over $650 million in increased investment and nearly 5,000 additional front-line staff to support learning recovery. While we are increasing investments in public education, the Ontario government is also providing an additional $225 million in direct financial relief to parents to help them through this period of economic difficulty and rising national inflation.

The plan includes:

  • $176M to expand access to free school-based tutoring;
  • A further $225M going directly into the pockets of families so that students may access learning resources;
  • $304M to support temporary staffing, allowing school boards to hire approximately 3,000 additional temporary staff, from teachers, to custodians to EAs; and
  • $90M – including an additional $10M in new funding – for student mental health resources.

We thank our parents and education staff for their collaboration, as we work together to ensure Ontario students return to a stable, normal and enjoyable school experience right through to June.

Labour Day

It was an honour to march in the Labour Day parade yesterday in Toronto with many of my colleagues, including the Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

This Labour Day we paid tribute to the hardworking men and women who keep Ontario moving. To build a stronger Ontario that works for everyone, the government is leading the way with historic changes that rebalance the scales and put more workers in the driver’s seat of their careers, and their lives.

Across our province, nearly 400,000 jobs continue to go unfilled. This is why the Ontario government is continuing to invest in innovative training programs that give workers the skills needed for new in-demand careers. In the coming months, we will be taking further action to ensure Ontario is a province where hard work pays off and big dreams come true.The only way we can spread opportunity and better jobs to every corner of our province is by working together – with labour, government, and business.  We are working for workers every day. Our mission is to make Ontario the best place to live, work and raise a family.

COVID Boosters for Youth

The government is expanding eligibility for COVID-19 first booster doses to children aged five to 11 to provide an extra layer of protection to those who need it ahead of the new school year.

As of 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, parents and caregivers of children aged five to 11 are able to book an appointment for a paediatric COVID-19 booster dose through the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900. Eligible individuals can also book an appointment directly through public health units that use their own booking systems, Indigenous-led vaccination clinics, participating health care providers and participating pharmacies.

Eligible children can receive their first booster dose at a recommended interval of at least six months following their most recent dose. Parents with questions are encouraged to reach out to their health care provider, the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre or the SickKids COVID-19 Vaccine Consult Service to make an informed choice for their family.

The Premier of Ontario meets with the Prime Minister

Premier Doug Ford met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Queen’s Park to discuss the current pressures on the health care system, as well as housing, labour market shortages, immigration, and other shared priorities.

The Premier and Prime Minister spoke about the current state of health care in Ontario and across the country, and the strains on health systems that have been heightened by the pandemic. They agreed on the importance of continuing to work closely as governments, as well as with our partners on the front line, to implement innovative solutions to problems that have been decades in the making.

The Premier raised the need for the federal government to work together with provinces on ensuring the long-term sustainability and accessibility of high-quality health care services for all Canadians and asked for a First Minister’s meeting to be held as soon as possible.

The leaders discussed solutions to tackle the housing crisis, including Ontario’s progress on building 1.5 million homes over 10 years. Recent actions taken include giving municipalities the tools to speed up housing construction and leveraging surplus provincial lands. They agreed that all three levels of government must work together to do what they can to get more homes built faster.
